Lee C. Bonner

Founder and leader, Lee C. Bonner Jr., as a juvenile served time in juvenile hall, as a teenager was tried and convicted of two counts of second degree murder. He paroled homeless after serving 30 years and 2 months straight inside the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation, only to find his family and neighbors displaced in other cities and in homeless encampments and his community gentrified.

In an attempt to help rebuild his community in East Oakland, California where he was born and raised, he joined on staff as a Housing Advocate with All Of Us Our None, a project of Legal Services For Prisoners With Children. He also joined as a coalition member with JustCities as the Lead Policy Outreach Leader for the Alameda County Fair Chance Housing Campaign. In these roles he successfully fought for and won new housing rights for currently and formerly incarcerated people and their family members and was able to obtain a housing lease of his own. As a formerly incarcerated person he voted and served on a jury and continue to fight to have the full human and civil rights reinstalled to all formerly incarcerated people. He has established a successful business called Intricate Details LLC, a janitorial company which he uses as a tool to advocate for youth transitioning out of foster homes and youth re-entering back into our society.

The B.L.O.C.C. Leadership Alliance is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization dedicated to peace, health, safety and community justice through conflict resolution and the establishment of safe spaces and cities. The B.L.O.C.C. is an organic Peace Movement seeking to not only quell community violence in the midst of crossfire and grieving mothers but to initiate a process of reconciliation and the making of amends between individuals, families, and communities that have been torn by the plaques of conflict, violence, and injustices.

Founded on the principle of “Clean Up What You Mess Up” the ideal of B.L.O.C.C. was established while walking laps on a prison yard in California where CEO and Founder Jabar Xavier Watson was looking for ways in which to deal with violence taking place between factions of youth from his community. arriving at the conclusion that there could be no peace amongst the youth unless there was first resolution by elders who had originally broken the peace long before the youth existed.

Incarceration To College was built because incarcerated youth deserve quality  and care informed access to post-secondary education. Incarceration To College serves youth incarcerated in Contra Costa County and Alameda County and provides support, stipends, and laptops to previously incarcerated youth scholars. Our research shows us that culturally relevant role models, multicultural and sociocritical material, affirmations, and access to college readiness can bridge the gap from incarceration to education. We are proud to have an A-G certified curriculum that allows students to earn CTE credits for participating in Incarceration To College. We have also partnered with Contra Costa County to provide instruction in the Golden Community Schools. In the future, we see Incarceration To College curriculum and program structure embedded into all educational institutions.

CEO and Founder of Incarceration To College, Shani Shay, a 33-year-old black female single mother born and raised in Hilo, Hawaii, moved to the Bay Area at age 15 when she was first incarcerated. At age 16 she began being violently beaten by her ex-partner. She was 28 years old the last time she was arrested and spent the majority of her adult life on felony probation.

Shani Shay is now an honor student in the African American Studies and Education Department at UC Berkeley. She is a statewide leader for the Berkeley Underground Scholars, and has been accepted into Harvard University.

WERC was one of the first non-profit agencies selected by Alameda County to receive funding for the Welfare to Work Program. Jill worked under the tutelage of Carole Brown, Director who taught Jill everything she knows about community programs, grant writing and operating a non-profit. She states, “It was my dream job, and I was devastated when Carole had to close the doors in 2004 due to lack of funding. Alameda County decided to take what they learned from us in the Community Organizations  Groups and keep the money for themselves”. she never forgot about the work that she did where she felt most focused and purpose. She now brings that same experience, energy and excitement to Vision Vocations.
